ST.JOHN’S COLLEGE, PALAYAMKOTTAI -2 2018-2019 MISSION OF THE COLLEGE: The Mission of the College is embodied in its motto “From Darkness Lead Us Unto Light”. As a Christian College St. John’s aims at imparting sound learning, building of character and spreading spiritual truth. In order that university education may be of the greatest value to the students and to society we believe that all training and instruction in College should have a moral and spiritual basis. This College, therefore , imparts moral instruction to all its students and to those non-Christian students who express a desire to receive it. HISTORY OF ST. JOHN’S ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE, a Christian Educational Institution, is established in 1878 by Church Missionary Society England at Palayamkottai, in Tamilnadu. The College is one of the first four oldest Colleges in the then undivided Madras State. A small and unpretentious Anglo-vernacular School established by the Church Missionary Society in 1844 in a hired house at Palayamkottai was the tiny seed from which grew the magnificent St. John’s College. It has now completed 140 years of fruitful service rendered for the cause of higher education. This Government – Aided – College was affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University previously and since 1990 affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. It has also been recognized by the UGC under section 2(F) and 12(B) in 1956 to receive institutional grants. St. John’s College is offering with many viable courses both UG and PG both regular as well as self-financed. It includes aided 10 UG courses, 5 PG courses 1 M.Phil Programme and 8 departments have been upgraded into Research Centres, In addition to, un-aided 8 UG courses, 7 PG courses and 5 M.Phil Self-Supporting Courses are running. It is provided with a vast play ground, Hostel facilities for men and women students, and quarters for administrative staff. Moreover, St. John’s College bestowed with good common central library facilities, department libraries, well furnished Laboratories for science subjects. It also provided with counseling centre, Retiring facility for Men and women students, Generator facility, Canteen and Banking inside the campus. This institution is serving minority, SC/ST, backward classes and students from the unprivileged sector of the society. A majority of qualifying students leave the campus to serve the society as first graduate in their families. Every year, St. John’s College produces quality students with soft skills and self confidence. Students are being placed at various institutions, banking sector, IT industries, Government offices, self-employment etc. To keep on track and to serve the society continuously, this institution may be provided with adequate grants for its development and growth. MANAGEMENT OF THE COLLEGE: St. John’s College is owned and managed by the Tirunelveli Diocesan Trust Association. The Tirunelveli Diocese is thus perhaps the first Diocese in India to Pioneer in the field of administration and management of a College. The Management has been providing succor and resources in men and materials to the College over the last one hundred and twenty seven years as a manifestation of its concern for the uplift of the socially and economically backward and downtrodden masses in and around South Tamil Nadu. The Management runs 3 Colleges, 327 Primary/Middle schools, 11 High /Higher secondary schools, 3 Community Colleges and 3 Teacher Training Institutions besides the College. It serves the society in multifold ways by running Old Age Homes, Orphanages, Hospitals and Schools for both Mentally Retarded and Physically handicapped children. It is rendering reputed service for the past 223 years benefiting the Southern part of Tamil Nadu. The College is primarily a grant –in-aid College with education heavily subsidized by the Government on most departments by way of staff salary, infrastructure development and maintenance. the College has been recognized by UGC and included under section 2(f) and 12 (b) in 1956. The College being affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is efficiently run by the TDTA Management, with the Diocesan Standing Committee of Higher Education as the major policy maker. The affairs of the College are directly controlled by the College Governing Board. The Governing Board is responsible for the upkeep and addition of the College infrastructure, makes an internal audit of the accounts and exercises a general control over the affairs of the College. INFRASTRUCTURE: St. John’s College has adequate physical facilities to run the Educational programmes and administrative functions efficiently. The growth of the infrastructure keeps pace with the academic growth of the Institution. The Institution has effective mechanisms for maintenance and optimal use of infrastructure. The College has spacious Campus in the heart of the city. The total area of the College is around 50 acres. The College has separate buildings for administrative and academic purposes. A spacious Conference/Seminar hall has been constructed with audio visual facilities to benefit students/researchers. The general library , also the departmental libraries, as well, are stacked with 64000 books, every one of them a thesaurus of the latest information in every discipline. The College has a big playground which is also used for conducting All India Inter University Tournaments. The distinctive feature of the playground is its capacity to hold more than 1,00,000 people and often public meetings by great dignitaries of national and international importance are conducted. St. John’s is the first institution to have a modern gymnasium in the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University area. The three hostels, Bishop Selwnyn Hostel, St. Paul’s Hostel and Sharon Hostel for Women Students have been providing a conducive atmosphere to the 300 students to further their academic, physical and spiritual growth. Beyond the quality of education, it is quality of life and the capacity for service to society that provides for the well being and overall development of students. Students are therefore introduced to a number of programmes like NSS, NCC, Student Christian Movement, Youth Red Cross, Nature Club, Friends of Police Programme, Blood Donors Club, to have a glimpse of the wide spectrum of social needs and enthuse them in the direction of active service in future to reach out to the disadvantaged in the society.
