A small and unpretentious Anglo-vernacular School established by the Church Missionary society in 1844 in a rented building in palayamkottai was the tiny seed from which grew, St.John’s College, now an acknowledged Institution in the academic field. In the year 1957 the under graduate department of chemistry had been origined during the period of prof.

Vedasironmani. Prof. Vedasironmani’s period witnessed the building of the chemistry block. Dr.D.Seenikumar Selvanayagam, principal in charge from February to May 2009 took efforts to introduce post graduate department in Chemistry and that was realized from academic year 2009-2010. As an initiative to convert the post graduate department into a Research department of chemistry M.Phil course was started in the year 2011.

Dr.S.Theodore David manickam was the first Head of the department and he continued his noble carrier even after his retirement. He has 43 years of teaching experience and 25 years of research experience. He successfully guided 25 M.Phil scholars and 4 PhD candidates. He continued as head of the department of chemistry from 2009- 2014. Dr. S. Asha Jebamary is the current HOD. She completed her doctorate degree under the guidance of Dr.S.Theodore David manickam.

40 M.Phil scholars were successfully completed their degree and continued their carrier as Assistant professors and as research scholars.56 post graduate students completed their degree and employed in various fields. Four of our staff members were awarded their doctorate degree. We have planned to raise our department as a Research department and planned to get minor and major projects.
