About
The first batch of students for B.Sc. Degree course with Physics as the major subject was admitted in June 1957. At that time, St. John’s College was affiliated to the Madras University, Chennai. The Physics department was considered as one of the best departments in Tamilnadu. The Department started growing under the capable headship of Prof. M. Arunachalam who also served as the Chairman of Board of Studies and Board of Examinations of the then Madras University. He along with his team of dedicated colleagues evinced keen interest in moulding the students academically and in other extracurricular activities.
Later Prof. Rajkumar Ambrose, Prof. Stanly Austin, Prof. P. Subramanian, Prof. S. Sitaraman, Prof. P. J. Charles, Prof. V. Thothatri and Dr. H. Alex Devadoss during their stewardships took the department towards further excellence. It is really a noble gesture on the part of Prof. S. Sitaraman who has donated to the Department Library of more than 2500 books. As a mark of respect to this great Professor the department Library has been named “Professor Sitaraman Library”
The Department takes legitimate pride in its glorious history of having produced many distinguished scholars who occupy many eminent positions in different walks of life in our country and abroad. To cite a few, Dr. T. S. Natarajan, Dept. of Polymer Physics IIT, Chennai and Dr. R. Simon, winner of the covetable Shanthi Swamp Bhatnagar Award in the year 1993 for Physical Sciences, currently working as Senior Professor, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai are our distinguished alumni. The long awaited M.Sc. Physics course was started in the academic year 2006 -2007. The M. Phil course was started in the year 2013.
