The Department of Mathematics of St. John’s College is as old as the college itself and it has the unique honor of having scholars like Dr.Burn from England. From a humble beginning, the Department keeps growing, catering to the academic and intellectual needs of many. At first, English was offered as a compulsory Language Paper for Intermediate and Degree courses.
In the year 1945, taking into account the growing demand of the students to study Mathematics, as a major subject, graduation course in Mathematics was introduced. The Department of Mathematics was able to produce a number of University rank holders each year in the Madras University and then in the Madurai Kamaraj University in the early days. Having been much dated by its productive performance resulting in moulding the future leaders of the society – like I A S officers, Central Ministers, Executives in the police Department, Administrators in central Excise, Professors and Principals in various Universities and Colleges all over India and abroad. The Department went up for graduation and with the University’s approval and Government grant. Post-Graduation course (M.Sc) in Mathematics was introduced in 1967, when the renowned thinker, Dr. Burn was heading the Department.
St. John’s was the third college in the Madurai University area and was the first college in the southern districts to offer M.Sc., degree in Mathematics.
Both men and women students were admitted in the P.G. course. In the year 1971, Dr.Burn left India and the famous Mathematician; Dr. S.Arumugam became the Post graduate Head. He served the Department of Mathematics for a long period of 21 years as Head and in the year 1992 he left St. John’s to head the Department of Mathematics, M.S. University, and Tirunelveli.
As expected the department of Mathematics continued to produce Gold – Medalists year after year and today it can boast of its proud alumni shining in various walks of life – most as college Lecturers, as research scholars and many as responsible government officials.
Right now there are around 144 students in B.Sc degree course and 50 in M.Sc. There are 10 members in the faculty in which 6 are Ph.D degree holders and all of them are experts in their respective fields. M.Phil. Mathematics was introduced in the year 2007. There are 15 students in M.Phil. course. We have got gold medals and university ranks in M.Phil. too.
The Department was upgraded as Research department of Mathematics in the year 2017. At present, there are 5 approved research Guides in the Department along with 4 Full times research Scholars and 5 part-time research scholars perusing their research.
