The Department of Mathematics of St. John’s College is as old as the college itself and it has the unique honour of having had scholars like Dr. R.P. Burn from England, Dr. S. Arumugam. From humble beginning, the department keeps growing, catering to the academic and intellectual needs of many. At first Mathematics was offered as an optional paper for intermediate courses. In 1945, taking into account the growing demand of the students to study Mathematics, as a major subject, UG in Mathematics was introduced. The Department of Mathematics was able to produce number of University rank holders each year in the Madras University and then in the Madurai Kamaraj University in early days.
Post-Graduation course (M.Sc.) in Mathematics was introduced in 1967, when the renowned thinker, Dr. R.P. Burn was heading the Department. St. John’s was the third college in the Madurai University and was the first college in the southern districts to offer M.Sc., degree in Mathematics.
In 1971, Dr. R.P. Burn left India and the famous Mathematician, Dr. S. Arumugam became the head of the Post Graduate. He served the Department of Mathematics for a long period. After 21 years as a head, he left St. John’s College and joined Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli as head the Department of Mathematics.
In 2008, M.Phil. Mathematics was introduced and in 2017, both UG and PG Mathematics courses were started under self-financing schemes.
The Department is having a set of 07 qualified and dedicated faculty members under self-financing schemes.
